A modern retro-horror journey

Pixel Game Maker Series: The Willow Man takes the series in a twisted adventure that makes you survive the impending horror. Developed by Richard Letran using the Pixel Game Maker MV, this addition to the Pixel Game Maker series drives a spine-chilling narrative that leaves Rin, the protagonist and her friends, in an abandoned house.

Pixel Game Maker Series: The Willow Man stays true to the classic 16-bit style, the game manages to capture an old-school charm. With straightforward gameplay, this game is designed for players looking to relive the essence of retro horror games but with fresh storytelling.

A simple yet effective atmospheric horror game

Pixel Game Maker Series: The Willow Man starts with one of the classic horror tropes of rumors guiding unwary teens to an abandoned house, turning their doubts and curiosity into a nightmare-fueled adventure. With 16-bit elements, the game remains vibrant even on scarier nights, adding dread whenever that vibrance fades. In addition, this horror game curates an unnerving experience through their use of the Willow Man — a twisted yet colorful antagonist.

Combining light puzzle-solving with horror elements, the game tasks players to explore eerie rooms while dodging the Willow man and their traps. The game’s simple mechanics make it accessible, but the tension is ever-present as you navigate dark, unsettling halls. While the puzzle sections aren’t challenging, the main draw of the game is its ambiance, which excels in creating an unsettling mood throughout the levels.

The sound design complements the visuals, with distinct sound effects and ambient music enhancing the tense atmosphere. The sound, combined with its horrifying themes elevate the nature of the Willow Man, making every chase, encounter, and boss fight intense. However, despite its strong visual design, the game lacks depth in terms of gameplay mechanics. Some players will find the gameplay repetitive, as it mostly revolves around exploration and basic puzzles.

Perfect throwback game with simple gameplay

Pixel Game Maker Series: The Willow Man offers a nostalgic throwback to classic 16-bit horror games with a modern twist. While it excels in atmosphere and storytelling with key moments that stand out, its simplistic gameplay may not satisfy those looking for more depth. For retro fans and casual gamers, however, this pixelated horror journey provides an enjoyable, eerie experience packed with mystery and tension.
